In September of 2014, I moved from my home-town, London, to Brighton to study at University. Considering this University was not my firm
choice, at first I wasn’t exactly ecstatic about moving to this East Sussex
city. However, I have recently come to appreciate the diverse range of things
that Brighton has to offer, namely its culture, events and, of course, it’s
beautiful beach.

Brighton is known to be one of the most diverse cities in
the UK. Similar to London’s Camden Town, it has a strong sense of bohemianism,
through its unique and independent shops, as well as its vibrant culture that
screams artistry and autonomy. Furthermore, this city is also known for its
active LGBT community. Coming from South London, this was a different
environment for me, but it has provided me with the opportunity to meet and converse
with an array of people, not just from the LGBT community, but with others who
have different backgrounds and beliefs. I find this interesting because it
enables me to learn about various cultures, increase my knowledge and widen my
perspective of the world. I also couldn’t help but notice how friendly people
are in Brighton, in comparison to London (or my experience of it anyway). Of
course I’m not suggesting that all Londoners are hostile, but I have noticed Brightonians to be more neighbourly.

Irrespective of these perks, what I love most about Brighton
is the range of events it offers. As an introvert who isn’t the stereotypical
fresher, I’m not particularly into clubbing and therefore prefer to attend more
chilled out events, such as spoken word, music gigs, comedy clubs, small social
groups etc. Thankfully, Brighton is bursting with events like this, at
reasonable prices as well. Organisations, such as Hammer & Tongue and Come
Rhyme With Me, focus mainly on spoken word poetry, whilst venues such as
Komedia bring you comedy. Music gigs are known to take place at venues such as
The Haunt, The Hope & Ruin and many more. For such a small city, Brighton
is full of exciting events and booming with diverse culture, offering a little
bit of something for everyone. I look forward to discovering more of this town
over the next two years!
