Today’s workshops consisted of Sahar Halaimzai from Pen International; Jenni Graham and Natalie Clarkson from Wannabehacks and lastly, freelance Photo Journalist Steve Forrest.
Now, I could write this article based on the individual sessions that took place today. However, as this is the last YJA blog post I will be writing, I want to emphasise what I’ve learnt from this experience as a whole and the fantastic opportunities it has offered me.
3 key things I’ve learnt this week:
1. Read EVERYTHING– Reading all forms of texts whether it be Magazines, Tabloids, Broadsheets, Blogs etc. is essential in the process of developing your writing. It also provides you with knowledge on several topics and view points, which could give you ideas for other things you may write about in the future.
2. Stand Out- It’s crucial to be inquisitive and sell yourself, especially in the competitive field of Journalism. Make sure you do or say something distinctive that distinguishes you from other people, as it could provide you with valuable opportunities in the future.
3. Research- Make sure the research you carry out is accurate and aim to get as much information on the story as possible. This makes your article credible and consequently people will be more likely to share it.
This past week has been such an AMAZING experience and I will forever be grateful to The Young Journalist’s Academy for accepting me on this course. It truly is full of incredible opportunities and I would HIGHLY recommend it to any young aspiring Journalist. It is very rare for schemes such as this to come along and whilst you’ve got the chance- you should grab it with both hands!
