Are you looking for the best jobs to work remotely? In today’s society, remote work is becoming increasingly popular and realistic, thanks to the rapid development of the internet. It has made us all more accessible than ever before!
Recently, there has been talking about working from home due to the recent coronavirus outbreak and some who are self-isolating.
Although it’s an unfortunate circumstance, it is making people realise that working from home doesn’t have to be a luxury. The internet is a utility that should be taken advantage of to work flexibly and balance other aspects of life.
Being a freelance writer for just over a year now, my client base has allowed me to work remotely – that includes my home, library, or anywhere I choose for my office to be for the day. Along my freelancing journey, I’ve discovered a few job roles that also allow this. Here is a list of 11 best jobs to work remotely:
Writing
Writing is one of the most almost universal jobs that allow you to work remotely. A laptop to type and internet access to communicate with your client is really all that is needed.
It is also a fairly reliable skill to propose, as most businesses will need a writer at some point. Whether it’s website content, social media captions or blogs. From my experience, being a copywriter specifically opens doors for more regular work when writing for brands.
However, there are also options to pitch articles to publications. This is one of the ways I started out as a freelancer. However, this route is a bit more sparse in terms of regular reliable work.
This is because your pitch submission may not always get a response as editors have many to sift through. And even if it does, it may not get picked up. Understandably, the news is closely attached to timing and so you have to be very timely when submitting Journalism pitches.
Pitching also requires research to ensure your idea hasn’t already been published to the publication you are pitching too. It needs to be unique. So pitching may be a good route to take on a more ad-hoc basis.
There are a plethora of different types of writing and many of which can be done remotely. As writing is my first and foremost passion, it is top of my personal list of best jobs to work remotely.
Video Editing
As humans, we are visual creatures. So, with the rise of social media and platforms like Instagram and YouTube, in particular, videos have shown to be the most effective level of engagement. We know that YouTubers and Instagram Influencers can make a lot of coins from these platforms.
So, with increasing demand for video content, video editors are also needed in order to prepare this content. This is a skill you can pick up pretty quickly through practice.
I decided to invest in Adobe Premiere Pro early last year to practice for my Instagram account and from that have been commissioned to provide this service to clients.
Now, I am by no means a professional video editor, but I have enough skills to do the basics. You too can achieve this with enough practice. This is probably second on my personal preference of the best jobs to work remotely.
Virtual Assistant
With many people taking the plunge to start their own business in this modern age, with that comes admin responsibilities and organisation. This is where Virtual Assistants step in. The duty of a virtual assistant includes a range of things.
From organising meetings to admin spreadsheet tasks to carrying out market research for your client, answering emails and any other administrative tasks. Being a business owner can often be a lot to manage. So, virtual assistants are a useful way to hire easy and flexible help.
Social Media Manager
Social Media is a vital aspect of marketing in this day and age. It’s a free way to reach your audience and build a following. Therefore, many businesses are looking for social media managers to help them produce content and manage content.
Skills you’ll often need for this role include basic graphic software skills, such as the free graphic software Canva, that has templates for various social media platforms. You’ll also likely need to be familiar with a Content Management System (CMS), such as Hootsuite to schedule content in advance at certain times. This will save you a lot of time than having to post manually.
Email Marketer
As people are communicating with each other in various ways, emailing is one of them, especially for work. Brands often email to keep in touch with their customers and keep them updated.
This is part of e-marketing. Platforms such as Mailchimp, ConvertKit and OmniSend all provide email marketing services. They allow you to send email campaigns to subscribers. As businesses use this more, having the skill to use these platforms is another opportunity for income. Again this is an easy task that can be carried out from any location with internet access.
Tutoring
As well as being a freelance writer, I am also an English Tutor. I meet most of my students at their home, but I’ve also tutored online and local spaces like the library. There are several tutoring sites that allow you to tutor online, allowing you to work from anywhere with internet access. Tutorhunt is the best UK based one I have used, as it doesn’t take any agency fees from your bookings.
Tutoring also doesn’t require having an official teaching qualification. You just need knowledge about a particular subject, so this could even be self-taught. I wrote a post here explaining more about becoming a tutor.
Website Developer
Having a website is something I strongly urge for any self-employed person. It is like a digital shopfront. Therefore, with more businesses taking their websites seriously, many are looking for web developers to design or even set it up via theme templates. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a key feature to making websites searchable and visible on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).
For example, I set up this Remi Reports blog by myself. I used a WordPress theme and customised it to my taste. To make it more SEO friendly and shareable, I also installed plugins. I am by no means a professional web developer, but if someone was looking for some assistance with setting up the very basics of a website, I could potentially help them, from this experience.
However, there are levels to everything. So, if you are highly skilled at web coding, and designing websites from scratch, this is an incredibly valuable skill. The business of web developing has high earning potential and typically charges premium prices. So if you have the skill, or have a passion for it, I definitely recommend pursuing it!
Customer Support Service
This is another role that has developed more recently, thanks to the internet. There are options to connect with people more easily. Apps such as tawk.to have a live chat that can be installed on your phone. Push notifications appear when customers send queries. There are also apps that allow you to speak via phone call to customers, with a registered number to the business. With apps like this, you can work from anywhere.
Translator/ Interpreter
Do you have the talent of multilingualism? This is something you could profit off of. With there being more and more ways of connecting, there are also more opportunities to translate. Whether it’s interpreting a piece of written text or translating verbally, there is a range of options for this.
Online Tester
This option is possibly more ad-hoc. However, there are opportunities such as Amazon Mechanical Turk. Here you can complete simple tasks that require a simple human eye to look over such as reviewing descriptions. You’ll have to apply for an account and if accepted you can start.
Bookkeeper/ Accountant
With the increase of business owners, there’s more demand for people to keep their finances and business expenses in check. If you are knowledgeable in accounting, you can offer this in-demand service.
I hope this list of best jobs to work remotely, has helped you gain some ideas of flexible working options.
