This post is the first of a new segment on the Remi Reports blog called the freelancer interview spotlight. It will be a series of stories from freelancers and their journeys and tips based on their experience.
Adina Pascall is a freelance content strategist, specializing in UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) Design. Adina is a childhood friend of mine and has helped me significantly on my journey as a freelancer, as she had started the journey long before me. It was a pleasure to feature her on this post. What influenced you to become a freelancer?
I was attracted to the freelance lifestyle because of the flexibility that it offers. I really liked the idea of being able to work from anywhere in the world, with a wide range of clients and to determine my own work schedule.
How long have you been freelancing for?
I started freelancing as soon as I graduated in 2018, So I have been a freelancer for 2 years now.
What do you currently freelance in?
I am a Content Strategist and UX/UI Designer.
Do you think it’s important to have a niche?
Most definitely! Having a niche helps you to win more clients as you’ll be able to pitch yourself as an experienced specialist in your field.
What would you describe your niche as?
I’m still defining my niche, but I’d say working as a designer with a digital marketing background helps me to offer valuable insights to clients.
What resources have you found useful as a freelancer?
Watching various YouTube videos and vlogs by other freelancers and creatives.
What do you like most about freelancing?
The freedom and flexibility to shape my work schedule.
What challenges have you found with freelancing, and how do you battle through them?
My main challenge has been establishing a balance between working and doing other things. I have overcome this by setting boundaries and sticking to them. I achieve this by working more strategically and efficiently during the week.
What tips do you have for those wanting to do freelancing or build their own business?
Dedicate time to build your only brand and presence. It’s easy to get caught up on client work and put this on the back burner.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy watching films and spending time with my family.
How do you find the work/ life balance being a freelancer? Do you have any tips for this area?
Create a to-do list to keep you on track -Take regular breaks -Set realistic deadlines with your clients -Stick to your boundaries. For example, set aside a day where you focus on other things
What are your tips for avoiding bad clients?
Work with clients who:
- Genuinely respect your time and truly value your contribution to their business.
- Care about your personal growth as well as the growth of their business.
What key characteristics are needed to become a freelancer?
Resilience, self-motivation, independence and being willing to learn.
