Most freelancers are solopreneurs, which means it’s not uncommon for us to work alone. But at least, pre-covid, we had the option to work in more places outside of our home. But that is restricted currently, which means that sense of loneliness can creep in much more. Especially those who live alone. A recent study showed that nearly two-thirds of freelancers say their job makes them feel lonely on a daily basis. This is something that needs to change. There are several ways to help combat freelancer loneliness. Here are a few that have helped me and hopefully can help you on your journey:
1. Get A Pet To Tackle Freelancer Loneliness
A furry friend can be great company throughout your working day. My cat sometimes comes to lay beside me when I’m working, or even wants to play sometimes.
This can be a really great source of an entertainment break.
2. Connect With Other Creatives
Freelancing is a very specific journey that not everyone can relate to so connecting with other freelance creatives can be a good way to connect with those who can relate.
Joining freelance groups, like mine, could be a good place to start.
3. Switch Up The Location Of Your Work
If you’re working from home, you can switch up the area you work in.
Whether it’s at a desk in your living room or on the floor in your bedroom, these subtle changes can make a difference in helping you feel like you are in a different environment and make you feel less isolated.
If you can, working outside of your home, in libraries for example can be a good way to change your environment completely.
4. Pick Up A Hobby In A Group
You can help keep your creative juices flowing and energy up by taking up a hobby in a group setting.
This could be jogging, walking, or even taking lessons to learn a new instrument. Check out this blog post on creative things to do when feeling existential.
5. Touch Base With Those Who Keep You In Good Spirits
You may not always feel filled with excitement to do work. So, having people who bring that sense of positivity to your life can really help carry you through when working from home or by yourself.
Whether it’s WhatsApp or even a quick phone call.
6. Have Meetings With Clients To Tackle Freelancer Loneliness
If you feel like you would like to have conversations with people more, ask to book meetings with your clients for brief calls.
You can make small talk as well, which could make a difference and helps you get some human interaction.
7. Create A Structure To Tackle Freelancer Loneliness
In an office job, the structure will already be created for you, but as a freelancer, you have to create this yourself. Through creating a structure, you can manage your time better and feel more driven to complete tasks you have set. It helps you be more focused on work and productive. This can make your mind less focused on the lonely aspect.
I hope these tips help you in combat freelancer loneliness. Remember, you are always welcome to join my Facebook group to join a community of freelance creatives.
