Kori Winters is a talented and passionate freelance writer. In this post, she shares her experience and tips as a freelancer.

What influenced you to become a freelance writer?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but kind of fell into freelance writing. I used to be a full-time associate editor at a trade magazine publishing company and continued doing freelance writing for them after I left. I started my copywriting and editing business, AccordingtoKori.com, as a personal blog. Many people gravitated to my writing style and began asking for help developing their content, so that’s how my business grew.

Are you a full time or part-time writer?

Full-time. I do copywriting and editing for my 9-5 job and my business.

How long have you been freelancing?

I’ve been doing freelance writing and editing for about three years now.

What publications do you freelance for?

I’ve done work with xoNecole, The Mighty, and publications for BNP Media. Most of the copywriting and editing work I do is through my business for other entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Do you think it’s important to have a niche?

Yes, it’s very important to have a niche because it helps people identify what you’re an expert in.

I love that I have the ability to help people articulate their thoughts into words that tell their story.

What challenges have you found with freelancing, and how do you battle through them?

Balancing my business with my 9-5 job has been my biggest challenge, but I’m learning how to better manage my time and take everything one step at a time. The biggest thing I’m learning is how to give myself grace.

What tips do you have for those wanting to do freelancing or build their own business?

Be patient with yourself. This isn’t something that happens overnight. When you’re consistently putting out valuable content, the clients will come. Just give yourself grace and go at your own pace.

Compelling, unique and impactful

What do you like to do in your spare time?
