Below is a short article I wrote last year, briefing a trip I went on, but didn’t really get the chance to publish it. Better late than never, ey? Enjoy!

On Friday 7th December 2012, seven students from the gifted and talented scheme attended a conference at Tottenham Court Road. This event consisted of the four speakers; Julie Arliss, Professor Tom Greggs, Jeffrey Hodges and Dr Mark Lewny.

The topics lectured by these speakers included Resilience and Self-esteem, The Philosophy of the Embryo and Does a snail have consciousness? All of these utterances were very intriguing; however, I was particularly fascinated with Professor Tom Greggs’ lecture on The Politics of Tolerance. This lecture opened my mind to different ideas and approaches of tolerance and how it can be considered a bad thing as well as good.

Dr Mark Lewny’s Rock in 11 dimensions lecture was also a particularly impressive utterance. From playing his electric guitar to throwing fake cushioned-bricks at the audience, Mark had the audience instantly engaged with his practical and thrilling analogies.

To end the conference, Dr Lewny played his amusing song about science with his uniquely designed guitar. Following this, we took a group photo with the musician in memory of this entertaining event.

All seven students said that this was an amazing opportunity and would like to give special thanks to Kathy for making it possible for them to attend.
