March is all about Women. It signifies Women History Month, International Women’s Day, as well as Mother’s Day. There are so many women who have done phenomenal things in the world. This month is a good opportunity to learn more about these women, as well as celebrate the women you may know more personally. Here are 11 ways to celebrate Women’s History Month:
Appreciate The Fantastic Females In Your Life
Let the females close to you in your life know that you appreciate them. Write a thank-you note, or gift them with something unique. Think of it as an extended Galantine’s day to spend more time with the special ladies in your life.
Support Female Entrepreneurs
There is a range of female business owners doing amazing things in 2020!. Root2Tip is a natural care product brand, founded by Sal Wynter who is really passionate about hair care and being careful of what we put in our hair. Purely Natural By Anastasia, founded by Anastasia Chikezie offers Sandalwood made hair tools, with less snag than metal or plastic combs. Both of these brands are included in my natural hair staples. Another brand I am fond of is MamMaw; an Ankara fashion site, owned by Shantel and filled with bright festive designs. Having worked with the owners of all of this business, I see how passionate they are about their business and the quality care they give to their customers. Shantel MamMaw is also the fashion designer of the No Ordinary Woman Chat Show (pictured on the last image, with hosts Caz and Janelle).
Read Up On Her-Story
There are so many iconic women who have done great things, that many may not know about. There is a range of resources available for you to learn about them; from traditional books to Wikipedia, to YouTube! Whatever your preferred learning method, you can delve deeper. If you’re not sure where to start, you could read up on Mae Jemison; the first black female astronaut. The Ethiopian Empress, Taytu Betul, who said no to colonisation, is also another strong female figure.
Share What You Know About Historic Women
Once you’ve discovered some of these great women, why not take this month to be unapologetically bold about iconic female figures and share this knowledge with others?
Watch Female Inspired Films
Film is a great art form for engaging storytelling. There are increasingly more diverse storylines about historic females. The She Did That Documentary recently released on Netflix was released at this perfect time, as it celebrates female entrepreneurship. Hidden Figures is another great film worthwhile watching.
Make History Yourself and Express Your Creativity
If you’re a follower of this blog, you’ll know that it’s all about embracing creativity. Expressing your creative talent and sharing it with others is a way to leave your mark in the world. Your creativity could inspire someone else. You could be making history yourself, through sharing your creativity with others.
Buy A Book For A Little Lady About Powerful Females
Educating the next generation about women who have gone before them is so important! Representation matters, so a young girl learning about fantastic female figures at an early age, can act as a seed to show them that they can do whatever they put their mind to. Why not buy a book about an iconic woman, like Little Leaders for a little girl or donate to a local school? This little step could lead to a big change.
Donate To A Little Women Organisation
Another way to invest in female movements is donating to organisations designed to progress female empowerment groups. BelEve and IB Youth (Incredible Brilliant Youth) are two British organisations dedicated to empowering young girls to reach their goals through workshops.
Watch Female TED Talks
TED Talks is a great platform full of educational and inspirational content. Some specific talks I’d recommend watching include, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s talk on The Danger Of A Single Story, which talks about the importance of diverse storytelling. I also found Patricia Bright’s talk on Creating a Digital Seat at The Table, encouraging as a digital content creator myself.
Attend A Women’s History Month Event
With International Women’s Day falling on the 8th March, there are a few events surrounding specifically this day, as well as throughout the month. You could have a look at Eventbrite to see what events there are near you celebrating women. Some that I have come across through social media, include BLAM Event and Lecture and Exhibition Launch. You could also perhaps attend an event featuring a particular woman who has inspired you?
Treat Yourself
Remember to celebrate the achievements and your greatness too! And if you’re not a woman, you can still treat fellow women you know. Let them know just how great they are!
